How to use it
Three steps, zero setup
- 1
Press start
The focus timer counts down 20 minutes. Keep the tab open and get on with your work.
- 2
Look away when it chimes
Every 20 minutes it nudges you to look about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. That is the whole rule.
- 3
Let it loop
It restarts on its own, all day. Adjust the focus length or turn the chime off any time.
The technique
What is the 20-20-20 rule?
Staring at a screen holds your eyes at one fixed distance for hours. The focusing muscles stay tensed, tears evaporate because you blink less, and the result is digital eye strain: tired, dry, aching eyes and headaches.
The 20-20-20 rule is the simple fix eye doctors recommend: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds. The distance lets those muscles relax, and the pause reminds you to blink. This timer just keeps the rhythm for you so you never have to watch the clock.
